Have YOU heard the term “HealthSpan?”
Have YOU heard the term “HealthSpan?”
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve heard the word pop into conversations, articles and podcasts. And now I’m wondering:
Have YOU heard it too?
What does “HealthSpan” mean to you?
I may be a little behind on this term, but here’s what I’ve learned about this buzzword.
Healthspan is the number of years we live in good health - free from chronic disease and disability.
It’s different from lifespan, which is how long we live.
Interestingly, there is typically a 9-year gap between the two, which shows that people may spend their final years alive without optimal well-being.
So why is this term suddenly everywhere?
Because the conversation is shifting. It’s not just about living anymore - it’s about living better.
Think:
More energy
Fewer medications
More purpose
Less pain
And more strength throughout your later years
The health and wellness professionals and industry are focused on extending the years people are living in optimal health and well-being.
So, you may be wondering- how can you extend yours?
Eat Foods that are full of nutrients by focusing foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats. This includes limiting processed foods with added sugars and excess sodium.
Stay Physically Active. Exercise helps preserve muscle mass, heart health and mobility. The recommendations are 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise plus two days of strength training. Engage in daily movement that you enjoy such as walking, hiking, swimming, yoga and weight training.
Seek preventative help by managing your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar which are conditions that if left unchecked, can lead to chronic disease.
Manage Stress by practicing mindfulness, meditation or hobbies that bring you joy. This includes spending time in nature and outdoor spaces.
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Stay socially connected with friends, family and your community which improves your quality and enjoyment of life.
Exercise your brain by continuing to learn, by doing puzzles, or doing brain busters.
